The transit division of our maintenance department has developed through the years into the current test bed for new Suffolk County equipment. Our Vice President of Maintenance readily serves as a consultant regarding maintenance practices and equipment specification to the County's Fleet Manager. This relationship results in a first hand working knowledge of some of the new technologies being developed. Areas currently under development include diesel/electric or turbine/electric hybrid propulsion systems, talking buses, wheelchair systems, automatic vehicle location, Smart Bus technology, multiplex wiring systems, advances in engine and transmission electronic controls and electronic fare collection systems. This division in 2008 was the first in Suffolk County to run hybrid diesel/electric transit buses, continuing our effort to be more efficient and environmentally friendly.
